So I'm starting to think about the next project. I have a pair of 515B's that have been totally rebuilt by GPA they are beautiful!

I am wondering what everyones opinions on the best cabinet to build for them would be? I only have a pair so I'm thinking something along the lines of a 816 style cab.

What do you all think the best cabinet for them is?

'Best' is a moving target, so what kind of performance over what BW are you wanting from it?

Your options are quite limited to a bass horn cabinet. The 816 is an excellent choice . If for Home Hi Fi.

You can make the cabinets with a veneer .

The 828 cabs are huge and you might not want these
for home use unless your sitting at least 20 feet from them.

If your looking for a horn . I would try the Fostex Radial wood horn retail is 400$
with a 1" throat driver by GPA either 902 or 909.

"Best" really is a big target isn't it, I'm not really sure what direction to go with them, I guess my thought was to figure out where they would perform the best and then fill in the bottom with a sub and the top with the appropriate horn

They would probably see mostly indoor HiFi and some mild PA, they probably aren't really suited for to much PA use.

I currently have GPA 604's for the home and a pair of 515G loaded 828's that get used for PA both indoors and some outdoor. So as I said earlier I'm not really sure what direction to go with these.

I guess I need to know what BW they are at their best at and go from there, I'm open to any style cab. BR, horn loaded etc.

IMO, 816 would be a step backward from the 828.

Why not consider a "210 split", or something along those lines.

I'd want to exploit the best of what the 515B can do, and i think that's best done by getting them in a bass horn with the lowest possible cutoff.

If you plan to use a sub, forget about the reflex volume of the "standard" Altec boxes and put the resources into the horn flare with the lowest tuning.

This of course is just one opinion from my narrow little mind.

    Greets!

OK, since a sub is an option, then I agree that the largest practical compression horn is the way to go, so how long (including CC), large and heavy can you tolerate?

Bowtie, I am actually very interested in the "210 split" there used to be a website with a bunch of pics and info about it but lately I haven't had much luck finding info about it.

Your thoughts to exploit the best of a 515B is exactly what I had in mind.

Another cab. I have looked at is the "Imperial Folded Horn" at the Decware website but I'm afraid it would need more room to sound good than I can give it.

GM, I am actually open to the idea of very large and heavy if that is what it takes to make these guys shine, what is "CC", and how large are you thinking?

GM was kind enough to post the 210 split stuff a while back here, but for the life of me can't remember what the thread was about. A search of the board using those keywords didn't bring it up before my attention span wandered.

Maybe GM remembers, or can post again. If not, I have them somewhere, but I suspect somebody remembers.

There's still an article out there somewhere on Michael Frye's 210 splits, i search to no avail.

Article was in Sound Practices issue #15.

You could try him at this email, 'tis the most recent i have.... [email protected]

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">I refer to the Imperials as "EF's" or "eternal fortunes". Having known someone who went this route, trust me when i tell you they'll cost a fortune to build or have built, and you'll spend an eternity finding their new home. Each one is quite literally the size of a side by side refrigerator/freezer.

The Imperial may have done magic for the driver around which it was originally designed, but in person for me they're just huge golden oak albatross' that fail to impress.

One thing i've wondered about a "210 split" is the standing wave effect, and if it merits building them to accomodate angled sides rather than parallel sides as per the original design. Hopefully our senior members will chime in with the verdict.

Not sure what you'd use for a sub, but Old Guy posted a link to these some time ago.

I haven't begun building yet, but i have stocked the materials to build 4 boxes in the vertical baffle design, still vacillating on the best woofer to load them with. These seem to be the best ratio of physical size to LF extension out there, at least for my budget.

    Just a 'quickie' for now:

'CC' = compression chamber, IOW the driver box

Don't know if Frye's stuff is still on the net, but here's what the Wayback Machine has archived: http://web.archive.org/web/200502130...frye/index.htm

I uploaded his SP article awhile back: http://s120.photobucket.com/albums/o...210/?start=all
